What is a Dedicated Server?

Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server can be either managed or non-managed by a dedicated server hosting service.  In both cases, a dedicated server is leased by a client whose company’s technical desires requires the flexibility and freedom that a shared hosting server often does not allow.  A dedicated server gives more technical freedom than a shared hosting service, but it does not give as many options as colocating your own server and equipment.  A company choosing a dedicated server can select their own operating system and hardware that best suits their needs without having to compromise their wishes with other various companies’ technical needs as much as they would have to with a shared hosting type server solution.  A dedicated server service is provided by a dedicated server company at a data center or colocation facility where the most reliable and fastest Internet connectivity exists along with hardware, software, redundant networking and power sources, HVAC systems, server administration, technical support, colocation and onsite security.

Dedicated Servers Utilize Strengths of A Data Center or Colocation Facility

A company that is self-sufficient technically and able to administer their own server will lease a non-managed dedicated server.  This type of service costs less than a managed server and also allows greater control over your business 24/7.  However, if a business does not have system administration as a resource within its company, then a managed server service may be required.  Both managed and non-managed dedicated server service is a type of Internet hosting service where the server is owned by the dedicated server company and hosted in a data center or colocation facility.  The benefits of relying upon a data center or colocation facility’s resources are immeasurable.  An array of services, technical sophistication, security, and the fastest, redundant Internet connection possible make dedicated server services a useful entity for any growing business.  Constructed to the highest standards, these facilities provide redundancy in both its network and power.  This translates to the elimination of latency and power shortages regardless of any outside activities or weather disasters because of its fully equipped UPS back-up system, power generators and state-of the-art technology.  Furthermore, the data center or colocation facility protects a dedicated server in its specially cooled, highly secured environment around the clock by using HVAC specialized air conditioning, an advanced surveillance camera system, card key access, and onsite security guards.

The Downside of Shared Hosting

An entrepreneur or company that understands the value of the Internet and wants a web presence often begins with a shared web hosting service on a server at a data center or colocation facility.  Shared hosting employs the initial web related services for a business in its infancy, furthermore preventing increasing costs due to server maintenance and other technical requirements.   Up to a few thousand different businesses can share a server for its web hosting needs, thereby cutting expenses down significantly.  This may seem attractive economically, but it equally can cause thousands of problems.  If any one customer has a problem technically, then the other customers sharing that same server are impacted just the same.  Therefore, as a company grows, it often will depart from the restrictive nature of shared hosting, seeking the independence that a dedicated server offers.

Shared Servers, Dedicated Servers and Colocation

Dedicated server services typically use Linux or Windows based operating systems.  While there are various versions of these operating systems and they are quite popular among many businesses, there are many other choices a company may prefer.  In this instance, choosing colocation service may be a better option for satisfying specific technical needs. For further description on the differences between colocation and dedicated servers, see article: Dedicated Servers vs. Colocation

A dedicated server is undoubtedly superior to a shared server due to its autonomy.  Whether a company invests in a managed or non-managed server is dependent upon its financial means and technical personnel.  In both cases, the partnering with a dedicated server company's services and resources at a data center or colocation facility helps strengthen a business considerably.  Dedicated servers help pave the way to future opportunity for a company, generating new business.  With sustaining growth and profit, a company often transitions out of dedicated server service to colocation.
