Hurricane Electric
colocation facilities at the
55 South Market address in San Jose have been
there for over 10 years.
This is one of the oldest and
most connected colocation
sites to get services from.
Hurricane Electric is one of
the largest and fastest
Internet Backbone networks and
colocation providers in the
world. They have an all
fiber optic OC192 Internet
network which is advanced
technology with the most
reliable and fastest network
equipment.
For the past few years
Hurricane Electric has offered
specials at this site giving a
Full Colocation Rack with
power included for only $400
per month. They did sell
out the space and stop taking
orders before they expanded
adding three more facilities
in the Bay Area (their
Fremont-I Colocation Facility,
Fremont-II Colocation Facility
and their San Jose-II
Colocation Facility).
Hurricane Electric maintains a
24/7 on-site NOC staff at this
San Jose site to give any
needed phone support and
Remote Hands Service, which is
included with their colocation
services. They also
don't charge a cross connect
fee within their facilities.
Another useful tip is that you
can buy the premium wholesale
Hurricane Electric Internet
bandwidth at this site and
have it delivered to the other
suites in the
Market
Post Tower Building.
Because of this there are many
colocation and Internet
network companies who get the
premium HE bandwidth at this
San Jose site and use in the
in the other parts of the
building. Hurricane
Electric San Jose is a great
facility all around for
service and the rates - if you
can get into their part of the
building, if not then the next
best thing might be to the get
one of the HE bandwidth
specials in the San Jose
building and use colocation
from the CRG West suite or
something comparable.

The San Jose IBX Equinix
Facility at the
11 Great Oaks Blvd. location is a
much more connected location
than the new San Jose Equinix
location. They have a
fairly extensive list of
Internet and Telco networks at
this location so if your need
is peering it is a good site
to be at. Some of the
top Tier 1 networks located at
the San Jose Equinix include
AT&T, China Telecom,
Level 3, Comcast,
Sprint, Japan Telecom,
Hurricane Electric, MCI,
SingTel,
UUNET, Verio,
InfoRelay, XO, Earthlink
and hundreds more.
The downside of the San Jose
Equinix site is the pricing
and the speed on on-site
support. Equinix tends
to charge between $750/month
and $1200/month for a full
cabinet with power. They
also charge a $150 -
$250/month cross connect fee
for each cable between the
provider and your cabinets and
any other cabinets you want to
connect to. This kind of
cross connect fee is pretty
standard in the colocation
industry, except if you have
been spoiled by a company like
HE. They do also have
well trained on-site staff
24/7, but the time it takes to
do a Remote Hands ticket is
usually about 2 hours, so it
is best to have your own
Remote Reboot Power Strip when
you colocate at this premium
facility. Equinix calls
their Remote Hands Service
"Smart Hands" and charges
$125/hr. (when I last checked)
so it is good to be prepared
for this and plan for your
needs. If budget is not
a consideration, and you don't
need a lot of on-site Remote
Hands Services, then overall
the Equinix San Jose site is
one of the best sites for
colocation.

Facility at 1735 Lundy Avenue
is Equinix's newest San Jose
location and does not yet have
as many Internet network
backbones available at the
first though for a small
monthly transport fee you can
get connectivity from any of
the networks at the other San
Jose Equinix location.
The features and details of
this site are similar to the
first Equinix Facility with
similar high pricing and star
wars designed interior looks.
The benefits of the Equinix
Facilities is that some
networks such as Hurricane
Electric offer special rates
on Internet bandwidth transit
that can sometimes offset the
cost of the rack space and
power charged by Equinix.

The Market Post Tower
Building (55
S. Market) in San Jose was (and
is) the original MCI MAE West
connecting point where many of
the largest Internet networks
connected with each others
networks in order to exchange
traffic that was destined for
other networks. The MAE
West connecting point has the
second largest amount of
Internet traffic in the world.
The closer a network is to the
major connecting points, and
the larger the connections the
network offers, the faster the
speed of throughput. If
you are looking for a San Jose
colocation site that offers
great Internet networks such
as Inforelay, XO,
#1 Colocation Services,
MCI, Hurricane, etc. and if
you need power at a low cost,
this can be a great facility.
The cross connects within this
San Jose colocation facility
tend to have a low monthly fee
and the setup fees are
reasonable.
The downside of this facility
can be that they like to get a
longer term contract.
Many of the newest contracts
that have been offered have a
built in cost increase on the
contract each year. Also
the Remote Hands Service costs
extra and is often very slow.
So with this site it is also
advisable to have a Remote
Reboot Poser Strip so you can
remotely power down and power
cycle any servers or colocated
equipment that may need it.
If you want a different
contract, service and price,
but still want to be in the
San Jose market post tower
building, then you can also
colocate with Hurricane
Electric within the same
building and utilize their
included on-site Remote Hands
Service. This can give
you the best of the benefits
including the buildings
location, Hurricane's Tier 1
Network quality and low rates,
and the fast HE Remote Hands
service. They allow most
any Internet network to cross
connect into their suites and
have very open and fair
customer policies. A
great choice for San Jose
colocation services.
